The 2024 growing season began in Rheinhessen with a mild spring, prompting budbreak as early as mid-April. The warm temperatures provided a promising start to the season. Fortunately, the vineyards around Westhofen were spared the late frost at the end of April, an important factor in the vines’ subsequent development.
FROM FLOWERING TO THE START OF THE HARVEST
Moderate weather prevailed until flowering, balancing out the vines’ initial head start. A consistent water supply throughout the growing season ensured healthy, vigorous vines and optimal flowering conditions.
The harvest began on 12 September with a first selective picking of the Pinot varieties. The main harvest took place from 16 to 23 September under ideal conditions. The grapes were of outstanding quality and in excellent condition.
During the Riesling harvest, a change in the weather brought repeated rainfall and required patience. Nevertheless, the grapes remained healthy and ripening continued slowly but steadily. The Riesling was harvested between 27 September and 10 October, once again yielding ripe and healthy grapes, albeit with more moderate must weights than in previous years.
CLASSIC IN THE BEST SENSE
The young wines of this vintage are reminiscent of classic years such as 2002. We are extremely pleased with their elegant style and look forward to the coming months, when we will be able to taste the results of our work.
